International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR)

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is ranked amongst the top 100 universities in the world and a member of the prestigious Australian Group of Eight research-intensive universities.  With an enviable research track record, vibrant campus and working environments, supported by the freedom to ‘innovate and inspire’ there is no better time to join Western Australia’s top University.

About the team

ICRAR is a WA State funded high profile equal joint venture established in 2009 between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia (UWA). The Centre’s headquarters are located at UWA, with research nodes at both UWA and Curtin. ICRAR is one of the lead Australian organisations participating in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project.

About the opportunity

We are looking for a highly motivated and suitably qualified individual to join the distant Universe science unit at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR).

You will work on spectroscopic and multi-wavelength observations of galaxies aimed at understanding the effect of galaxy environments on galaxies and the availability of HI gas, primarily linking optical-selected samples from DEVILS to radio measurements from MIGHTEE. You will be expected to take the lead on co-ordinating between the DEVILS and MIGHTEE surveys and undertake core science for both projects.

Under the supervision of ARC Future Fellow, Dr Luke Davies, you will join one of the most active and rapidly growing research institutes in Australia. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the scientific exploitation of state-of-the-art multi-wavelength surveys, including DEVILS, GAMA, DINGO-ASKAP and MIGHTEE-MeerKAT. This project will also lay the foundation for future studies combining WAVES-4MOST and ASKAP/SKA.

This project will focus on a broad range of data analysis and science across multiple wavelength domains. The expectation is that you will both undertake core science related to Dr Davies’ Future Fellowship, as well as develop your own complementary research interests.

As the appointee with a PhD in a field relevant to extragalactic astronomy, you will demonstrate:

  • Expertise in extragalactic astrophysics as evidenced by a strong refereed publication record in this area
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, show initiative, problem solve and work productively as part of a team
  • The ability to interact and collaborate with researchers, and work reliability and effectively in distributed scientific collaborations
  • Experience in the analysis of large galaxy surveys
  • Knowledge of high-level computer programming (e.g. Python, R, Julia, etc)

Full details of the position’s responsibilities and the selection criteria are outlined in the position description.

Why ICRAR at The University of Western Australia?

The PDRA will be based at the ICRAR headquarters at the beautiful Matilda Bay campus of UWA. Perth, Western Australia, is listed as one of the world's most liveable cities and offers an excellent ocean-side lifestyle.
