Technical Officer (Zoology, Marine and Biological Sciences)

  • Commencing salary: $80,243 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area
College Services provides academic administration and technical support services to the University’s schools, supporting Heads of School, academic staff, and research students. The team is dedicated to delivering effective and efficient services aligned with the University’s strategic goals, focusing on continuous improvement and best practices.

Technical Services supports UWA’s teaching and research objectives through discipline-specific applied knowledge and skill sets. The team operates across teaching, fieldwork, laboratory management, instrument stewardship, research training, and workshop design, ensuring compliance and safety standards are met. This team supports training and learning across diverse disciplines in the Natural, Agricultural, and Social Sciences, enhancing education and research both on campus and in the field.

About the opportunity

  • Provide high-level technical support for practical teaching in Zoology, Marine, and Biological Sciences, including laboratory and field-based activities, with opportunities to work closely with animals, specimens, and participate in field trips.
  • Deliver training and expertise in specialist equipment and procedures, supporting academics, technical staff, and students while ensuring safe and compliant practices in all operations.
  • Maintain, service, and procure teaching equipment and consumables, contributing to efficient lab operations and adherence to relevant policies, safety standards, and audit requirements.

About you

  • Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience, with a strong technical background in laboratory and field environments.
  • Experienced in animal handling, fieldwork (eg. trapping), snorkelling, and 4WD driving, with knowledge of relevant permits and ethical requirements.
  • Proficient in microscopy, chemical handling, and solution preparation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience supporting and training staff and students.
  • Proven ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines, multitask, work independently, and collaborate effectively in a team.

Special Requirements

  • Current “C” Class manual driver’s licence.
  • Able to fit the physical requirements of the position.
  • Some after-hours work may be required.
  • Ability to operate 4WD vehicles is desirable.
