- Part-time (0.8 FTE) appointment on an ongoing basis.
- Base salary range: $104,243 – $115,661p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.
About the area
The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery (LWAG) is a university art gallery of international standing that supports the teaching, research and engagement activities of the University of Western Australia. We do this through our exhibitions, our public education program run in tandem with exhibitions and the maintenance and display of the University of Western Australia Art Collection and the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art. The LWAG team is responsible for the custodianship and management of evolving, nationally significant art collections. The team delivers an annual program of intellectually rigorous and engaging exhibitions that contribute to the local and national arts landscapes. Exhibitions run in conjunction with a program of impactful and dynamic engagement and events, targeted to the various communities served by the gallery. LWAG is a community facing facility, incorporating a number of galleries; a retail space; engagement spaces; and offices and arts stores. The building is also available to the university community and external groups to hire for functions and events.
About the opportunity
- Assist in the research, care, and presentation of LWAG’s programs and the University’s Art Collection.
- Contribute to exhibition development, collection documentation, and engagement initiatives designed to increase accessibility to UWA’s art holdings.
- Support research projects, contribute to public programs and publications, and provide guidance on collection management while ensuring compliance with museum best practices.
About you
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Art History, Art Curatorial/Museum Studies, or directly relevant experience and training, and demonstrated wide knowledge of twentieth century Australia art history and Australian contemporary art.
- Substantial experience working in a curatorial capacity within a public gallery or art museum, and demonstrated knowledge of the professional practices, requirements and standards pertaining to collection management, exhibitions and display within a public art museum.
- Highly developed research, written and oral communication skills, including the preparation of grant applications, museum catalogues and publications, reports and interpretative material, and the presentation of public talks and lectures.
- Experience collaborating with Australian First Nations artists and demonstrated cultural awareness in adhering to protocols and best practice to ensure cultural safety.
- Experience handling, and the physical ability to safely handle, works of art according to professional standards and occupational health and safety requirements.
Note: A current National Police Clearance Certificate and “C” class driver’s licence will be required by the successful applicant.
