Job no: 520688
Work type: Full Time
Location: Crawley

  • Develop and support Cube Analysis and Rendering Tool for Astronomy (CARTA) software within a global team to enable high-impact science using SKA data and infrastructure.
  • Full-time appointment on a tenurable basis.
  • Base salary range: Level B, $113,934 – $134,824 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is on a mission to build and operate the world’s largest radio telescopes. To fully exploit the scientific output of the immense amount of data flowing from the telescopes, the SKAO is working with science communities across the world through SKA Regional Centres (SRCs), which are nationally lead hubs that form the basis of a global compute and science support infrastructure.

The Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC) is Australia’s portion of this international network, tasked with establishing and building capability to support the Australian and international SKA science communities, thereby ushering in the next era of astronomical discovery and advanced data processing.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Curtin University, Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, and The University of Western Australia (UWA) are the four foundation partners formally collaborating to support and develop the Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC) into a long-term national facility.

About the opportunity

  • Develop and enhance CARTA software by writing C++ backend code, improving deployment on large-scale infrastructure, and implementing new features such as time-domain and Virtual Observatory functionality.
  • Collaborate with international teams and scientific communities, acting as a liaison between developers, scientists, and operations personnel to support high-impact science using data from the SKA and its precursors.
  • Support the AusSRC ecosystem, contributing to the development of the SKA Science Data Archive, user services, documentation, and community engagement activities.

About you

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline such as physics, astronomy, or computer science.
  • Work experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in C++, Java or Rust.
  • Experience with repository management, software packaging, source code control environments and practices, particularly GitHub.
