Technical Assistant

  • Join a dedicated team supporting UWA’s research and teaching goals across Natural, Agricultural, and Social Sciences.
  • Provide hands-on technical support for fieldwork and laboratory teaching in agricultural and environmental sciences.
  • Part-time (specified roster) fixed term appointment (0.53FTE annualised) until 14/08/26
  • Salary range: $77,205 – $82,011p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

College Services provides academic administration and technical support services to the University’s schools. Technical Services delivers discipline-specific expertise to support UWA’s teaching and research goals. The team operates across a broad portfolio including laboratory management, fieldwork support, equipment stewardship, and workshop design. This role supports the Field of Education of “Natural, Agricultural and Social Sciences” and may include disciplines such as animal biology, plant biology, archaeology, and geography.

About the opportunity

  • Support practical teaching in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences through technical assistance to academics, staff, and students in laboratories and field settings.
  • Prepare and maintain materials, equipment, and instruments; assist with procurement, maintenance, and administrative tasks; and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • Contribute to field trips, laboratory activities, and program enhancements, with flexibility to work varied hours during peak teaching periods.

Peak Periods
This role is 0.4 FTE during off-peak periods (31 weeks/year) and increases to 0.6–0.8 FTE during peak periods (21 weeks/year). Peak periods are from calendar Weeks 9–20 and Weeks 30–38: this equates to 0.53 FTE annually. The roster for each year will be confirmed by November of the preceding year, in consultation with you.

 About you

  • Year 12 or equivalent, with relevant experience and a strong interest in supporting practical teaching through equipment preparation and maintenance.
  • Physically fit and capable of performing manual tasks, including lifting, carrying, and handling equipment to support laboratory and fieldwork activities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well-developed organisational and time management abilities.
  • Proficiency in computing tools including word processing, spreadsheets, and online systems.

 Special Requirement(s):

  • Current “C” class manual driver’s licence.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Ability to operate 4WD and Light Rigid Passenger vehicles is desirable.
  • Some after-hours work may be required, including overnight fieldwork
