About the area

The Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems hosts the National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility (NGCF), a world leading geotechnical centrifuge modelling facility that brings together six Australian universities working on a wide range of geotechnical problems, both offshore and onshore. The NGCF has three centrifuges: a 3.6 m diameter beam centrifuge and a 1.2 m drum centrifuge and a 10 m diameter beam centrifuge located in a brand new 650 m2 laboratory in the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre. The appointee will work alongside other research officers as part of a larger technical support team that includes electronic, software and mechanical engineers.

About the opportunity

  • Under broad direction, the role involves significant responsibility for the operational management and strategic development of the NGCF’s technical facilities, including leading upgrades in consultation with the NGCF Director.
  • A key part of the position is shaping and influencing budgets, policies, procedures and processes to support efficient operations, while also ensuring staff training and compliance with health and safety systems.
  • The appointee will provide expert consultation and physical modelling design support to NGCF users and other university research facilities that rely on its technical capabilities.

About you

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in a scientific or technical field or demonstrated equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated management experience at a senior level within an organisation or core facility with strategic planning responsibility.
  • Knowledge of electronics, manufacturing techniques in mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering
  • Knowledge of geotechnical physical modelling techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and develop significant budgets and manage resources, and organisational skills to deal with conflicting priorities and meet deadlines

Note: The successful applicant may be required to work the occasional weekend or other after-hours work
