About the area

The Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (AHRI) is a national research and communication team based at the University of Western Australia. AHRI research focuses on crop and weed science, and herbicide resistance in the Australian grains industry, having received major investment from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). AHRI’s mantra is “More crop, fewer weeds – sustainably”. To fulfil this, we conduct research and extension to encourage sustainable cropping and weed control across Australia.

AHRI is based in the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment, which teaches and does research in cropping, marine and natural terrestrial systems. About the opportunity

• Process and analyse large remote-sensing datasets to support the development of weed management tools for Australian broadacre.
• Assess the potential for weedseed banks to develop in Western Australian cropping systems, using remote sensing and data science.
• Co-supervise post-graduate students when required.

About you

• A PhD in Agricultural Science, Biological Sciences, or a similar field.
• A demonstrable track record of excellence in research, evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles published in high-quality journals, relative to opportunity.  
• Experience in collaborating in interdisciplinary teams.
• Applying image-based analysis techniques for vegetation classification and discrimination under variable field conditions.
• Experience applying machine learning and deep learning methods for image classification, vegetation mapping and spacial prediction tasks.
