  • Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 3 years.
  • Base salary range: Level B, $118,150 – $126,817 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

The UWA School of Engineering is renowned for its award-winning researchers, teachers and facilities. It is a multidisciplinary school offering education and research in a number of engineering disciplines. This includes civil, environmental, mining, chemical mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering. You will work primarily in the Fluid Science and Resources Research (FSRR) Group which primarily conducts research across the resources industry as well as the Future Energy Exports CRC. The relevant theme to this project is the development of hydrogen production and export technology.

About the opportunity

  • Contribute to cutting‑edge research addressing the cost barriers of hydrogen liquefaction by exploring novel cryogenic gas processing technologies, including mixed refrigerants, magnetic refrigeration, and advanced sensing for solid formation detection.
  • Lead and deliver experimental campaigns focused on thermophysical property measurements at high pressure and low temperature, supporting the development of more efficient hydrogen liquefaction cycles.
  • Design, commission, and assess complex experimental systems, applying detailed finite element analysis and critically evaluating existing thermophysical property data and models for mixed refrigerant systems.

About you

  • PhD in the academic field of Chemical Engineering with a background in Mechanical Engineering or other higher professional qualifications appropriate to their discipline.
  • Strong track record of research publication and industry reporting, relative to opportunity.
  • Expertise in experimental thermophysical property measurements, at cryogenic temperatures, and with high-pressure and cryogenic equipment and handling of flammable gas.
  • Demonstrated experience of participation in research leadership and project management that promote research outcomes to government and industry. 
  • Ability to manage research projects and assist in supervision of research students.
