  • Base salary range: Level A, $83,449 – $112,371 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

The School of Molecular Sciences and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology bring together internationally recognised researchers working across molecular biology, genomics, and synthetic biology. This role is part of the Plant Artificial Chromosome project, a high-profile international collaboration between The University of Western Australia, the University of Cambridge (UK), Phytoform Labs (UK), and the Australian Genome Foundry at Macquarie University.
The position is based in the Bayliss Building at UWA’s Crawley campus, providing access to state-of-the-art laboratories and a vibrant research environment.

About the opportunity

  • As a Research Associate, you will contribute to innovative research aimed at engineering and characterising synthetic chromosomes for plants. Working under the guidance of a Research Fellow, you will progressively develop research independence while collaborating closely with academic and industry partners locally and internationally.
  • Your work will focus on constructing artificial plant chromosomes, expanding them in vivo, and evaluating their performance at molecular, cellular, and genomic levels. You will also contribute to student supervision, collaborative publications, and the translation of fundamental research into practical plant biotechnology applications.
  • This role offers an exceptional opportunity to build your research profile within a globally visible project at the cutting edge of plant synthetic biology.

About you

You will bring a strong foundation in molecular plant biology and a collaborative mindset, along with:

  • A relevant degree with a PhD  in a relevant discipline is required given the specialised nature of the role
  • Demonstrated research capability, including contributions to peer‑reviewed publications or high‑quality research outputs.
  • Proven technical skills in molecular cloning, PCR, plasmid manipulation, and bacterial culture, with experience in sterile plant propagation and transformation; experience working with the moss Physcomitrium patens or potato will be highly regarded
  • Experience with microscopy, data collection, laboratory record‑keeping, and data analysis.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
